Elisa Longo Borghini
Grazie Mille Mamma

De Velo, 7 August 2019
I had a very bad crash at the nationals in 2013. I broke my iliac crest, I had a 20-centimetre scar on my abdomen and had 100 stitches. I tore all my muscles up to my stomach. As soon as I had surgery, my mom came to my bedside in the hospital and said you need to believe that you can come back and make it to the world championships later in the year. It would be an impossible task. This was by far the biggest challenge I’ve faced in my career. My brother, Paolo, who was a professional cyclist in the World Tour,...

First Ever Non-European Maillot Jaune – Phil Anderson
There was quite a few successful Australian professionals in the peloton in the 70’s; Michael Wilson, Gary Clively and Don Allan to name three - but the man who really set the ball rolling was Melbourne’s Phil Anderson. The first ever non-European maillot jaune talks to Ed Hood about the Tour de Fra

A victory years in the making
I want to tell you what a Tour de France stage victory means. My oldest son told me he doesn’t like soccer anymore, cycling is his now favourite sport. My wife told me he is drawing cycling pictures with a rider putting his hands in the air and telling people, “that’s my dad.” He is six years old bu

Arlenis Sierra Cañadilla
De Velo,
17 July 2019

Against all odds: Cuban sensation Arlenis Sierra
Last year, I had an amazing season on the bike. It was also the hardest year in my life, going pro with a new team on a different continent. I was all alone but I was fully determined to succeed. This is my story. Growing up in Cuba, I lived in a humble house belonging to my grandfather. It was m

Mads Würtz Schmidt
De Velo,
16 July 2019

Here’s why Mads Würtz Schmidt has been in 3 Tour de France breakaways.
My granddad took to me to a post-Tour criterium when I was 4 years old. Bjarne Riis was racing after returning from the Tour de France. After the criterium, Bjarne had loads of people around him. My granddad picked me up and walked through the crowds to get to him. I was wearing a yellow t-shirt and

Quitting medical school to chase my dream
I was seven years into my medical degree with only 9 months left to complete my training. I had taken time out to intercalate, where you take a leave of absence to complete another degree, and I was just returning to medicine whilst finishing a masters in public health. In August 2017, there was
