Tour start dream come true.

Eleven Australians will compete in this year's Tour de France, but New Zealander Jack Bauer will be only the 11th Kiwi ever to compete in the French Grand Tour. Bauer was confirmed as a starter in the Garmin-Sharp squad and will make his Tour debut alongside Australian team-mate Rohan Dennis. The 27 year old will join Lotto-Belisol lead-out man Greg Henderson as the Kiwi starters.

Sat on the podium thrones at the Tour of Qatar on Monday afternoon after winning the second stage TTT, Jack Bauer had Paris-Roubaix champion Johan van Summeren to his left, Tour de France stage winner Tyler Farrar perched to his right. The New Zealander could have been forgiven for pinching himself. Eight months ago, he was in less-exotic locations like Oldham, haring round Tour Series races as one of Endura's stalwarts.

Two years ago Kiwi Jack Bauer arrived on the Flanders scene as an up and coming ‘kermesse king;’ within six months he had signed a contract with UK pro squad Endura and had beaten ProTour stars Hayden Roulston and Julian Dean to the New Zealand elite road title.
