The Raisin Hope Foundation & More

After having to end his professional career as a cyclist in 2006 after a horrible bike crash that left him with a Traumatic Brain Injury, Saul Raisin founded the Raisin Hope Foundation - a foundation that raises awareness and supports survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury. Six years after his crash and founding his foundation, Saul and his foundation are still pushing to bring awareness to Traumatic Brain Injury and bring support and help that is needed to those who suffer from it. Saul talked to us from his home in Dalton, Georgia about the Raisin Hope Foundation, his life after the crash and his hopes for the future as well as other topics.

Saul was one of the best young American prospects in the sport. In 2006 he was on track to ride his first grand tour, the Giro d'Italia. Unfortunately disaster struck Saul before he made it the to the 2006 Giro.

Coming on four years ago, Saul Raisin was one of THE big things in US pro cycling. Top 40 in a hard Tour de Suisse and mountain king at the Tour de l’Avenir in 2005. A stage winner in the Tour de Langkawi 2006. Everything looked bright … and then everything went wrong.

Saul Raisin will join Cyclingheroes in 2008. The 24 year old will write regularly for our website. But Raisin has other plans as well. Cyclingheroes spoke with Saul Raisin about the end of his pro career, his wedding and his future plans.

Just 17 months ago, American Saul Raisin of the French Crédit Agricole team lay in a coma in a French hospital after crashing during a stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe race. His parents caught the next plane to France not knowing if Saul would still be alive when they arrived.

On his first ever visit to New York, Saul Raisin never stops talking. Still only 24, he is now a man on a mission to stage the biggest comeback American cycling has seen. “Dude, if I can race the American Pro Championships this year, I will surprise everyone."

24 year-old Saul Raisin is competing in is own Tour of California on a quest to raise support for his Raisin Hope foundation. He crossed the finish line of stage two in Sacramento thirty minutes ahead of the peloton's arrival and met with Cyclingnews for an interview to talk about his recovery.

When I did the research for this interview I just didn’t know what to expect. What I found was a great guy with his head on right, very articulate, smart and well versed, able to talk through some tough subjects with ease. Saul has learned one of the hardest lessons life has to offer, fate is a tough mistress.

Saul Raisin is working hard on his recovery and comeback after his crash at the first stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe (France) in April. To celebrate the one year anniversary of Raisin's crash Saul is organizing the "Raisin Hope" come back ride on March 31, 2007 in Dalton, Georgia.

Mardi 4 avril, première étape du Circuit de la Sarthe, la saison de Saul Raisin s’arrête brusquement. Victime d’une lourde chute, le diagnostic révèle un très grave traumatisme crânien, sans parler de plusieurs autres fractures. Le bilan est lourd, le garçon de Dalton (Géorgie) tombe dans un coma profond.
