Britain's last bone-fide Tour de France sprinter was Barry Hoban, who won eight stages between 1967 and 1975. His first came on the day after his friend, Tom Simpson, died on the scorching slopes of Mont Ventoux, the peloton deciding they would ride slowly and allow a British rider to claim the stage.
