Cyclingtips, Michael Better, 16 July 2016

BMC Racing’s Brent Bookwalter entered the Tour de France on a high. He finished third overall at the Amgen Tour of California in May, and was selected to the U.S. men’s road team for the Olympic games alongside teammate Taylor Phinney, who is not riding the Tour, a week prior to the start of the Grande Boucle.

It’s a different kind of Giro d’Italia for BMC Racing this year. Perennial favorite Cadel Evans is happily enjoying retirement, so instead of riding full-out for the pink jersey, the U.S.-registered team brings a new, flowing dynamic to the season’s first grand tour.

Pro Cyclists ‘need a voice’

Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing) was there when mud-caked glasses and silt-filled eyes dropped visibility to zero on Kebler Pass at the USA Pro Challenge last August. He was at the Giro d’Italia, too, where the rain seemed endless until it turned to snow, and controversy, atop the Stelvio.

All eyes may be on the pre-race favourites with the Giro d’Italia just a day away but behind every team leader there’s a committed squad of domestiques.

PEZ Talk: BMC’s Brent Bookwalter

Pez Cyclingnews, Edmond Hood, 3 June 2013

Some say that last is the worst spot to finish a race; but there’s also a school of thought which says second place is the worst. And some would say that the worst races to finish second in are National or World Championships; the winner gets to wear the champion’s jersey for a whole year – the runner-up gets the silver medal to toss in a drawer, somewhere. BMC’s Brent Bookwalter had to endure that feeling twice in the one week. He finished second to big chrono specialist Tom Zirbel (Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) in the US Elite Time Trial Championship. And he was second again, to Freddie Rodriguez (Jelly Belly Cycling p/b Kenda) just days later in the US Elite Road Race Championship. Bookwalter has a good record in the Nationals; he was second in the U23 TT and third in the U23 cyclo-cross Championships in 2005 in the colours of Advantage Benefits-Endeavour. And the following year, with Priority Health he won the National U23 Road Race Championship and was silver medallist in the Time Trial Championship.

It’s November. The leaves are off the trees, and – for many of us in colder climes – the turbo trainer already is set up in the basement. But think back to spring and summer. Think back to an impressive breakout season by the BMC Racing Team’s Brent Bookwalter, who completed the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France on his first attempts.
