At the beginning of the year, the EF Education First WorldTour team made a bit of a splash when it announced some of its team members would be racing adventure races such as the Dirty Kanza 200 and Three Peaks cyclocross race.

I almost quit cycling in April

There was a point during this season in which Peter Stetina came close to hanging up his wheels and retiring. The long and agonising comeback from a career-threatening injury sustained in 2015 had been hard enough, but when almost the entire peloton began riding away from him during the spring, he started to wonder if he was fighting a losing battle.

I have to let the races beat me up and then come back stronger

The scars from Peter Stetina’s fractured tibia and patella injuries in his right knee are still clearly visible. The anniversary of his terrible crash in the 2015 Vuelta al País Vasco is fast approaching, but Stetina remains focused on his long battle to return to full strength as a professional in Europe.

Peter Stetina was having quite a good 2015 season until he hit a post set into the road in the finalé of stage one of the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco. He sustained terrible injuries, saying at the time: ‘I am lucky to be alive’. The man from Boulder was back racing in Utah by August and has signed a new contract with Trek for 2016 to team up again with Ryder Hesjedal. Ed Hood caught up with Stetina to hear all about it.

I am lucky to be alive

On April 6, in the final sprint to the finish line in the opening stage of the Vuelta al País Vasco (Tour of the Basque Country), it didn’t matter how careful Stetina — or anyone else — was in the peloton that day. Just 400 meters from the finish line, on the right side of the finish straight, two metal poles, about one meter high, remained in the roadway. In images that later went viral on the Internet, the only safety measure to highlight the danger were small, orange traffic cones sitting on top of the poles.

Peter Stetina (Garmin-Sharp) is making his very first appearance at le Tour de Langkawi, and he’s hoping to make it count. With just two of the ten stages not suiting the sprinters, it will be on the climbs to Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands that the 25-year-old is targeting, to try to take the overall race title for himself.
