I've proved, mainly to myself, that I can contest a Grand Tour

Cyclingnews, Daniel Benson, 3 December 2020

Dan Martin's fourth place overall and stage win in the Vuelta a España represented his best-ever return in a three-week race and the Irishman will look to build on that momentum as he prepares for 2021 and the chance to lead the line with Chris Froome at Israel Start-Up Nation.

Israel Start-Up Nation's Dan Martin is currently in his home in Andorra where he has reflected about what has happened and will come in the cycling season. Martin, just like the rest of the peloton, has been forced to stop his season due to the coronavirus crisis and keeps training in his home, where he also shares extra time with his wife and twin daughters. The Irishman is in a lockdown in Andorra, where he also thinks about the rest of the season...

32-year-old Dan Martin is about to take part in his 11th Flèche Wallonne and 12th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which he won in 2013. A many-time podium finisher on the two Belgian classics, the Irishman has experienced more frustrations and setbacks than joys.

It was just super-treacherous the whole day

CyclingTips, Shane Stokes, 10 July 2017

It was a day that could have turned out so differently for Dan Martin. Fourth overall on Sunday morning and poised to move up to third after the withdrawal of Geraint Thomas, the Irishman was also looking at a possible stage victory. Martin is a very quick finisher from a small group, has won races in the past in similar circumstances and would have grabbed the opportunity.

Cheered on by home fans, he has three goals in the event; the first is to take the pink jersey in the team time trial, although he admits that the all-round composition of his Garmin-Sharp team compared to the TTT-specializing squads makes that a difficult ask.

A stage winner in the Tour de France and a previous winner of a stage at the 2011 Vuelta a España, Dan Martin wants to achieve a similar goal in this year’s Vuelta. However the Irishman emphasises that he won't put himself under pressure as regards the overall classification.

Scooping victory fifty years after Shay Elliott triumphed into Roubaix, and becoming only the fifth Irishman to win a stage of the Tour de France, Dan Martin has said that he will pause and reflect on his victory before identifying his next goals for the race. “I am not really thinking about it yet. It is just a case of getting up north and having a day off,” he told VeloNation Sunday, speaking of his breakthrough Tour performance, Monday’s rest day, and what his next target will be. “I think everybody is very tired after the last couple of days. It has been so hot this first week. I think you saw today there is a lot of fatigue in the peloton. We wanted to put on a show, and Garmin-Sharp did.”

Roman Kreuziger, Dani Moreno, Daniel Martin...
