Es una apuesta segura dentro del ciclismo. El corredor neerlandés ha demostrado en sus últimos cinco años en el Sky/Ineos tener grandes capacidades para defenderse en la montaña. Distinguido vueltómano, Poels recaló esta temporada en el Bahrain-McLaren, con el que firmó para los próximos dos años.

Eindelijk mocht hij het zeggen. Na weken van zwijgen, bevestigde Wout Poels vorige week wat iedereen eigenlijk al wist: Team Sky wordt zijn nieuwe werkgever. In het Weekendinterview verklaart de 27-jarige Limburger zijn keuze.

Wout Poels moest de Tour vorig jaar na een valpartij al in de eerste week verlaten. De schade was groot. De carrière van een groot wielertalent leek vroegtijdig geknakt, maar de Limburger knokte zich terug. Zijn herstel verliep zo goed dat hij dit jaar voor de derde jaar op rij meedoet aan de Tour. “Het begint wel te kriebelen om te starten,” vertelde hij aan WielerFlits. We spraken met hem over zijn terugkeer en zijn ambitie richting de Tour.

It’s been a Vuelta where the form book means little; Nibali and Scarponi have cracked, so has Anton – that was my podium. But Cobo has amazed, Froome has surprised - and so has Vacansoleil’s Wout Poels.

One of my young personal favorites Wout Poels unfortunately had to abandon the Tour de France cause of illness, but now he is back on the bike and ready to shine in the Vuelta when the peloton hits the big mountains!

Wout Poels has impressed me massively this season so far. Saturday the young Vacansoleil climber starts his first Tour de France and I think it will be a good idea for all of you to keep a close eye on him when the peloton hits the mountains!

Zopas won Wout Poels een lastige rittenkoers in Spanje, de Vuelta a Leon. Talent in het Nederlandse wielrennen staat meestal synoniem met Rabobank. Maar P3-Transfer-Batavus bewijst het tegendeel. Wout Poels wordt wolgend jaar immers prof bij de opvolger Vacansoleil!
