In onze lockdownsessies kreeg Ruben Van Gucht het gezelschap van gewezen topsprinter Marcel Kittel. Hij antwoordde openhartig op een spervuur aan vragen van de Facebook-kijkers. Onder meer over zijn jeugd, zijn Tour-zeges, het afscheid van het wielrennen en zijn favoriete lead-out.

Im ersten Jahr der Zusammenarbeit fuhren Marcel Kittel und sein neues Team Katusha-Alpecin den Siegen hinterher. Nur zweimal war der im Jahr 2018 noch beste Sprinter der Welt erfolgreich. Seine Mannschaft insgesamt nur fünfmal. Tiefpunkt war der vorzeitige Tourausstieg und der Krach zwischen Kittel und dem Sportlichen Leiter Dimitri Konyshev.

Sommer im französischen Zentralmassiv! Marcel Kittel schaut auf den Pool im schicken Golf-Hotel von Saint Etienne in der Nähe von Lyon. Reinspringen wird er aber nicht. "Weil ich mir sonst einen Sonnenbrand hole", scherzt der fünfmalige Etappensieger dieser 104. Tour de France und zeigt seinen Oberarm, der wie bei allen Radprofis absolut weiß ist - ganz im Gegensatz zum Unterarm, der nicht von Trikot bedeckt wird.

It's been an odd build-up to the Tour de France for Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano). But is that such a bad thing? Having captured two stages in the Giro d'Italia in stunning style, he made a sudden abandon of the race with a fever on stage four. His recent triumphs in the Ster-ZLM Toer, though, would suggest he is right where he wants to be for the build-up to the Tour.

And he had a lot to tell us; from his early year’s right through to his four stage wins in last year’s Tour, especially that win in Paris on the Champ Élysées.

Passé à travers les gouttes lors du final chaotique de la première étape du 100ème Tour de France, Marcel Kittel a fait parler sa pointe de vitesse pour aller chercher la victoire et le maillot jaune par la même occasion. Le sprinteur allemand, très ému à l'arrivée, conquiert là son premier succès sur les routes du Tour, certes en l'absence de ses plus grands rivaux, piégés dans les derniers kilomètres. Mais qu'importe pour le coureur d'Argos-Shimano, fier et extremement ravi de sa performance du jour.
Être un des meilleurs sprinters mondiaux.

Dans sa collection de trophées Marcel Kittel va maintenant pouvoir ajouter… un diamant ! Victorieux du Grand Prix de l’Escaut, l’Allemand du Team Argos – Shimano hérite de la prestigieuse récompense promise au vainqueur. Un cadeau qu’il doit à… Mark Cavendish. Non pas que le Britannique d’Omega Pharma-Quick Step ait offert la victoire sur un plateau à Kittel, bien au contraire, mais c’est Mark Cavendish qui a demandé à l’organisateur à recevoir un diamant. Compte tenu de son record actuel de victoire (à égalité avec Peet Oellibrandt, 3 victoires), Cavendish avait demandait à Piet De Smet, l’organisateur, de se voir offrir un diamant, comme Tom Boonen en avait reçu un il y a quelques années. De Smet avait alors répondu oui pour le diamant, mais que celui-ci serait attribué au vainqueur et que si Cavendish le voulait, il lui fallait gagner. Voilà pour la petite histoire… Attendu par sa femme sur la ligne d’arrivée, Cavendish cachait mal sa déception. Se croyant promis au record absolu de victoire sur l’épreuve, « Cav’ » ne perd pas juste le gain du diamant, une spécialité Anversoise, il s’aperçoit surtout qu’il a été dominé par le sprinter Allemand, pourtant parti un peu loin de la ligne. Fight or flight: both are known human responses to stressful situations. In Marcel Kittel’s case, he’s chosen the first, as evidenced by his stage win on Thursday’s second stage of the Étoile de Bessèges. The 1T4I rider had placed second on day one, then seized the race leader’s jersey when he outsprinted Kris Boeckmans (Vacansoleil-DCM), stage one victor Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ-BigMat) and the rest of the bunch to the line at the end of the weather-shortened stage.
High on our list of riders to watch in 2012 is the talented young German rider Marcel Kittel who made his mark in his neo pro season in 2011 with 18 wins...
