Happy with life and cycling, and eyeing a possible WorldTour return

Cameron Meyer sits, smiles and relaxes. It’s the evening after a stage of the An Post Rás in Ireland and he – we – are in a quiet hotel in the northwest of Ireland. Outside are rolling fields dotted with gorse, rocky mountain slopes and a nearby beach. It’s peaceful, but there’s also a calmness about Meyer himself.

When Cameron Meyer and Dimension Data announced in June that they’d parted ways with immediate effect, many cycling fans were left with questions. Meyer had cited “personal issues” for his departure, but no further information was forthcoming.

An interrupted February and March has Cameron Meyer hustling for race days and form ahead of his first big objective of the year, the Amgen Tour of California, but it's the prize that could await in July should things go well that's driving the Australia onward.

Since he won the only World Tour race so far this year (the Santos Tour Down Under in January), Cameron Meyer is currently the world’s number 1 road cyclist. Though all is going very well on the road he is focussing now on the track world championships in the Netherlands next month.

Not content with being 2009 world points championship, Cameron Meyer (Australia & Garmin) decided he wanted a rainbow jersey for every day of a long weekend. We had a word with him soon after the Worlds.

Cameron Meyer's debut in the pro peloton in 2009 had some highs and lows. Gold in the Track Worlds to a shoulder injury mid season. The promising Garmin/Transitions rider is healthy and back with new goals to accomplish in 2010.

Although still only 21 years of age, the ambitious Garmin-Transitions rider has already acquired the coveted rainbow jersey of world champion and a ride in his first Grand Tour this season. Cameron will be joined by his younger brother Travis in the Garmin-Transitions colours during 2010.

Whilst most of us were obsessing about the E3, Brabantse Pijl and endless analysis of De Ronde, the world track championships were taking place in Poland. One of the candidates for "man of the match" was Garmin's Cameron Meyer with a gold and two silvers from three events.

The Italians started the 2008 World Road Championships in Varese in fine style, with Adriano Malori in a class of his own on the top step of the U23 TT podium. It wasn’t a bad start for the Aussies either, with 20 year-old Cameron Meyer from Helena Valley, Western Australia taking bronze.
