Van de veertien Nederlanders die zondag aan het vertrek van de 96ste Milaan-San Remo staan, is Martijn Verschoor (29) misschien wel de minst bekende. Verschoor start in het shirt van Novo Nordisk, een Amerikaanse ploeg die speciaal opgericht is voor diabeten. De Drent is – overigens net als al zijn ploeggenoten – zelf diabeet, maar dat verhindert hem niet om La Primavera met ambitie aan te vatten. “Diabetes mag een renner niet in de weg staan om een grote koers te winnen. Dat gaan wij de komende jaren bewijzen”, aldus Verschoor in het Weekendinterview.

It’s March so it must be time to catch up with Novo Nordisk rider; Martijn Verschoor. Even this early in the season he has put three big events under his belt and we managed to grab him at his Spanish base for some words before he shot off to Mexico. Racing, crashes, sprints, travel and diabetes, Martijn always has something to tell us.

It's winter time in Europe so the pros are still flocking to the South of Spain for training which is where we normally catch-up with Martijn Verschoor each year. Normally he is in Calpe having his own personal training camp, but this year his new Novo Nordisk team were having a pre-season get together in the very plush Husa hotel on the outskirts of Alicante. So let’s find out about the ’12 season and what's new for ’13.

Last year I bumped into Team Type 1 rider Martijn Verschoor and he filled me in on the facts about being a professional cyclist with diabetes. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. Well, Martijn was in Calpe again training for the 2012 season, so it was back to the Tango Bar for a good chat about this year, next year, diabetes, the TT1 team and...the life of Martijn!

It’s hard enough being a Pro cyclist, but to also be a Pro cyclist with type 1 diabetes and compete with some of the best rides in the peloton is quite an undertaking. We set up a meeting with Team Type 1 rider Martijn Verschoor in the seaside Mecca for training cyclists; Calpe.

Martijn Verschoor is een Nederlandse wielrenner die momenteel uitkomt voor de Amerikaanse ploeg Team Type 1. Ook in 2011 zal hij voor de ploeg uitkomen die het Pro Continentale statuut zal krijgen. Echter is het niet allemaal rooskleurig voor Martijn Verschoor.
