One of the great things about the women’s peloton is the range of personalities and backgrounds the riders come to the sport with – Sharon Laws personifies this. After gaining an MSc in Conservation, and having worked for charities, the British Government, the United Nations and mining companies, Sharon got to her 30s and swapped her career in environmental issues for the life of a professional cyclist.

Garmin-Cervélo rider Sharon Laws is one of those riders who cycling fans love to love. She’s a killer mountain domestique – for the past two years, you know it’s a hard race when you read about how Laws was in an early break, forcing the peloton to chase her down… ready for Emma Pooley to attack just as they’re rela_dsc0052_mediumxing over neutralising the threat – she always seems like a team player, ready to kill herself for her team-mates, regardless of if it’s her kind of terrain or not.

Last December Sharon Laws was looking forward to her first full year as a professional road cyclist with the Cervélo TestTeam. After two campaigns blighted by accidents and injuries, she was hoping for an incident-free season during which she could perform to her full potential.

This time last year year Sharon Laws was living and working in Australia with no thoughts of qualifying for the GB team, let alone the Olympics. Then she came second in the Australian National Championships and her life has been a whirlwind ever since.
