Phil Gaimon had a full career before hanging up his WorldTour wheels, but since then he has hardly stopped for a breath. As an ex-pro he fills his time book writing, social media and… riding his bike. Ed Hood caught up with Phil to hear how life is treating him.

Earlier this week Cannondale-Drapac rider Phil Gaimon announced he was retiring from the sport at just 30 years of age. He’s still young, he had offers from teams but, weighing things up, he decided that the lure of the sport and the strength of those offers weren’t enough for him to stay involved.

Todo es diferente a las carreras de Estados Unidos, en incluso San Luis. Los recorridos son más técnicos, los descensos más largos, el asfalto es diferente,… Mallorca me ha enseñado que tengo muchísimo que aprender sobre las carreras en Europa pero aun así pude ayudar a mis compañeros y sentirme parte de la carrera.

Different from the races in the United States, and even San Luis. The courses were more technical, the descents longer, different pavement. It showed that I have a lot to learn about European racing, but I was still able to help my teammates and be part of the race.

In 2012 Phil has already put a good start to his season with 1 stage and the Overall Classification at the 2012 Redlands Bicycle Classic as well as the King of the Mountains Jersey as well as a single stage win at the 2012 San Dimas Stage Race. As the season continues Phil hopes to be in good at Nationals as well as Cascade in the fall. He also has hopes that Kenda will be granted invites to the Tour of Utah and USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
