When it emerged that Richie Porte (BMC) had only broken his hip and collarbone in his spectacular stage 9 crash at this year’s Tour de France, the consensus was that he’d been extremely lucky. The images of the crash were horrifying, and when Porte was loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace, it seemed as if crashing out of the Tour was the least of his worries.

It’s been nearly a decade since an Australian started the Tour de France as the top favourite. But ahead of the 2017 edition, which begins this Saturday in the Germany city of Düsseldorf, it is the Tasmanian Richie Porte (BMC) that many regard as the man to beat.

Richie Porte has always been the nearly man with Sky, he has a good selection of wins, but there has always been a Wiggins or a Froome higher in the team pecking order. Now the Australian is following in the footsteps of Cadel Evans to the BMC team and new horizons. Alastair Hamilton caught up with Richie in Spain at the BMC team training camp.

I leave Team Sky without a bad thing to say about them

Three Tour de France wins in four years – it’s been a remarkable run for Team Sky and their British leaders, with Sir Bradley Wiggins’ 2012 victory followed up by wins for Chris Froome in 2013 and 2015. However, only one rider has been ever-present through every stage of those four editions of the Tour – the Australian, Richie Porte.

Things are falling into place for Team Sky’s Richie Porte in 2015. As of Sunday the Australian time trial champion has six UCI-classified victories to his name, including overall victories in two, week-long WorldTour stage races: Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya. But Porte has his sights set on an even greater success this season: the Giro d’Italia.

As the peloton races towards its first rendezvous with the climbs of the Alps in the 101st Tour de France, Australian fans will be paying close attention to one man in particular. Richie Porte is the personification of Sky’s “B-plan”. For the opening four stages, he was the super-domestique for the defending champion but then came a crash too many. The only rider to abandon the Tour in the treacherous fifth stage to Arenberg happened to be Chris Froome. He wouldn’t make it to the pavé and we know the rest of the story.

Just where has Richie Porte been these last few months? It's been rather quiet from the Australian since he abandoned Tirreno-Adriatico with illness way back in March, before bailing out on his Giro bid shortly thereafter. Amid the tens of thousands lining the Col de Mente, a wall of noise, and with the sun beating down upon him, Richie Porte wavered, then drifted off the back of the groupe maillot jaune. A line of Movistar riders amassed at the front and drove the dagger in deeper. Revenge for an embarrassing infliction the day before from Team Sky.

“No matter what happens here, I’ve still had a great season so far,” said Richie Porte a day after arriving in Corsica for the Grand Départ of his third Tour de France. He is the right-hand man of the race favourite Chris Froome. But he’s in a position on a dominant team that might see him vying for a place on the podium himself. But he’s not thinking about that yet. He’s content to recognise his achievements already in the 2013 season. RIDE‘s publisher, Rob Arnold, caught up with Porte on the Thursday before the 100th Tour de France. Here is a transcript of that exchange.
