British rider Peter Kennaugh is no longer part of Team Sky, but has nevertheless seen the scrutiny the team has been under in the media over the Bradley Wiggins TUE investigation and the Chris Froome salbutamol case. The Manxman believes there is a simple solution: get rid of therapeutic use exemptions altogether.

L’Equipe was exaggerating, but its recent headline ‘Le règne sans fin’ – the unending reign – had elements of truth to it. Since 2012 British riders have won the Tour de France a staggering six out of the past seven years. Bradley Wiggins got the ball rolling in 2012, Chris Froome took over the following year and then, this summer, Geraint Thomas knuckled down, stepped up, and took his own yellow jersey to Paris.

He’s the two-time British road race champion and in a few days Peter Kennaugh will make his second appearance in the Tour de France. He’s got an Olympic gold medal in his collection of prizes but just being back in The Big Loop is what he says cycling is all about. RIDE caught up with the Manxman earlier this year to find out a little bit about what makes him tick.

It was 2006 when I saw Peter Kennaugh as a Junior win a World title on the track and during his academy days he was touted as a future Tour de France winner. At that time, few, if anyone knew that Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome were going to win the Tour de France and many eyes were on the youngsters coming through like Kennaugh.

Success and insists lessons were learned in Florence.

His crowning moment, having founded the British Cycling Academy, was guiding Manx Missile Mark Cavendish from teenager to world champion. And now British Cycling’s elite road coach and Team Sky’s performance manager, Rod Ellingworth, believes another Manxman is set for a bright future in the sport.
