The Tour began with nine Australians and that tally is down to eight after the withdrawal of Luke Durbridge because of an accident in stage one. We spoke to ‘Durbo’ before the start of stage five to find out how his recuperation is going.

His girlfriend Lara had queried him about his use of a word during an interview following his win in the TT of the Driedaagse de Panne. Luke Dubridge admitted to being “elated” about the victory. She teased him a little. And they laughed.

While compatriots and fellow track world champions Jack Bobridge (formerly Belkin), Luke Davison (formerly BMC Racing), Glenn O’Shea (formerly An Post-Chain Reaction) have all opted to step down from road racing to focus on the track and Rio 2016, Orica-GreenEdge’s Luke Durbridge is confident that his future lies on in the WorldTour and has no intention of returning to the velodrome.

A few weeks into training for the 2015 season, Luke Durbridge said he was starting to feel like he was getting up to speed. His form doesn’t dip too much but he did allow himself a little bit of time off the bike before cranking things up again. He’s been a professional cyclist for three years already. Before signing his first contract with Orica-GreenEdge, he was the under-23 time trial world champion (2011). Before that he had been the junior TT world champion.

We spoke with Luke Durbridge before the Grand Départ in Leeds – remember that? It seems like a lifetime ago. The former Australian champion is still in there race. He’s optimistic about the TT that’s to come this Saturday but admits that there are moments when he wonders what he’s doing… the Tour can play tricks on the mind but Durbridge explained that he plays games of his own when we spoke to him an hour before the beginning of stage 18.

Australian cyclist Matt Goss has continued his strong early season form by winning the Cancer Council Classic street race in Adelaide. A lead group of five riders, including Australian youngster Luke Durbridge, stayed clear until five laps to go.
