U kent hem ongetwijfeld nog van die heroïsche Parijs-Roubaix van 2011. En wellicht ook van zijn pijnlijke afscheid door hartproblemen. Twee jaar na datum ziet Johan Vansummeren licht aan het einde van een donkere tunnel. Hij heeft nieuwe doelen gevonden in zijn leven. Eén ervan is … motorcross.

Johan Vansummeren is a big guy, standing at nearly two meters tall, but he was also a man with a big engine and could be relied upon in his fifteen Grand Tour rides. Then there was his crowning glory, winning the ‘Hell of the North’ in 2011. But on the 29th of June 2016, with his wife Jasmine by his side, Vansummeren had to announce his premature retirement from the sport due to a heart problem. Ed Hood caught up with the tall Belgian to talk through his career.

Vansummeren a déjà un pavé souvenir sur sa cheminée. Gaudin rêve de l’imiter. Tous deux partagent la même passion pour Paris - Roubaix qu’ils vont disputer ensemble.

Johan Vansummeren stands at 1 metre 98, that’s tall for a cyclist, but how tall must he have stood after winning the 2011 Paris-Roubaix? He made the important split and then left his companions in his wake to ride solo into that famous velodrome. We managed to catch up with the tall Belgian in Spain at the Garmin-Sharp training camp to ask what it feels like to win in the “Hell of the North.”

Le Tour du Qatar démarre ce dimanche et Johan Vansummeren est au départ l’un des hommes les plus populaires. Cela grâce à son succès sur Paris-Roubaix en 2011. Le coureur belge répond à Velochrono, dans un français hésitant mais non sans parvenir à se confier. Entretien instructif.

Vainqueur surprise de Paris-Roubaix, Johan Van Summeren est un homme doublement heureux. Parce qu'il a remporté la course de ses rêves et... devrait bientôt se marier.

Epuisé mais heureux, Johan Van Summeren ne feint pas son bonheur. A 30 ans, le Belge de l'équipe Garmin-Cervelo sort enfin de l'ombre pour inscrire à un palmarès maigrichon une des plus grandes courses du monde. Ce Paris-Roubaix 2011, c'est son jour de gloire. Pour l'éternité.

'Vroeger noemden ze me wel eens een vitrinerijder. Iemand die in het begin van de koers prominent in beeld was, maar in de finale volledig wegzakte.' Johan Vansummeren is echter klaar om te verhuizen. Van het uitstalraam naar de hoofdgalerij van het peloton.

Johan Vansummeren (26 ans) est le type de coureurs que beaucoup de directeurs sportifs aimeraient avoir à leurs côtés. Dans le Tour de France, il est capable de tirer le peloton pendant de nombreux kilomètres au service de Mc Ewen puis dans les étapes de montagne d’apporter une aide précieuse pour Evans.
