The cyclo-cross rider’s beat can be a lonely one. High summer finds him preparing for a season yet to begin, while his road compadres are in mid-season form. No matter. Ian Field (Hargroves-Ridley RT) has a solution: mix the solo miles with some of the UK’s biggest road races.

Last World Cup season, United Kingdom’s Ian Field had raised the bar for expectations in major international races. While he has had a career full of good rides and some of his results in 2014-2015 shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise, Field still performed in the clutch, especially under the pressure dictated by a domestic World Cup in Milton Keynes. Sometimes you time an interview just right and your subject goes out and does something big right after it. Take British cyclo-cross champion Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) – or should that be, ‘Field de Brit’ as they say in the Flatlands.

The first Belgian races have almost begun, the World Cup starts next month and there are only 8 days, 9 hours and 7 minutes to Cross Vegas (accurate at time of writing). Yes it’s crept up on us – it’s that time for the men who start like kilometre riders then bang out the same watts as a top chrono man but through sand, mud and snow.

A Field in Flanders

The clue is in his name, Ian ‘Field’ – smooth tarmac or even smoother hardwood boards are not for Mr. Field; he’s opted for the mud, sand, ice, adverse cambers and fields of cyclo-cross, not in the quiet of the green English countryside but rather in the madness that is Flanders.
