The second rest day of the 2016 Giro d’Italia didn’t have such a long transfer as the trek from Holland to the south of Italy on the first rest day. Ed Hood caught up with BMC’s Rick Zabel just north of Florence to catch-up on the German strongman’s Giro so far.

After whetting his appetite for top-level racing during his first season as a professional cyclist, Rick Zabel (BMC Racing) is targeting bigger and better things in year two. The young German will start his season riding in support of Philippe Gilbert at the Dubai Tour next week. However, he has his eyes set on riding the monuments and his first Grand Tour and the World Championships in 2015.

Rick Zabel is a promising sprinter with a lot of potential for the classics. This year will be his first year as a pro in which he will be riding for BMC Racing Team. In the beginning of 2013 Rick impressed by winning the Tour of Flanders U23 and later that year he managed to get three top 10 places at the Tour de l’Avenir. Nevertheless these results make Rick hungry for more! With his first professional race coming up at the Tour Down Under Cycling Updates spoke to him about his career so far and his short and long term ambitions.
