Magnus Backstedt on winning the Queen of the Classics.

RoadCyclink UK, Colin Henrys, 10 April 2014

It takes a special rider to win the Hell of the North, and few have been able to add the Queen of the Classics to their palmares – and even fewer from outside of Belgium. Swedish rider Magnus Backstedt is one rider to have earned a place in the elite list of winners, however, out-sprinting Tristan Hoffman, Roger Hammond and Fabian Cancellara in the velodrome.

He seems to have been part of the professional peloton forever; but all good things must come to an end and Garmin & Sweden (or is it Wales?) strong man Magnus Backstedt has decided it’s time to retire from top line racing.

Back To Action

pezcyclingnews.com, Guy Wilson-Roberts, 22 November 2008

Magnus Backstedt is one of the most accessible and ‘real’ men of the pro peloton. He always finds time to tap us into the often closed world of professional bike racing, and we talked to him recently about the 2008 season and his year with Garmin-Chipotle.

A fresh approach

protournews.com, David Arthur, 11 April 2008

We caught up with Magnus before he headed out to Paris Roubaix, and talked new teams, bikes and goals for 2008.

Entering his twelfth year as a professional, Big Magnus Backstedt has seen just about everything in cycling – from the good to the bad. But as bad as things might currently seem for the sport he remains optimistic, in part because of his new team situation.

"The team didn't understand how serious this was"

The big mystery back in July was why British-based Tour de France stage winner Magnus Backstedt rode in the Premier Calendar and didn't head for Paris with his Liquigas team-mates. The 32-year-old Swede gives an explanation for his absence.

Sometimes you can get a quality interview when someone is getting something to eat or going to the bathroom. We stopped Magnus Backstedt on his way to somewhere more lucrative. He was very pleasant and chatty and wasn’t doing the full bladder two step, so we don’t think he was on the way to the john.

It's All Over

It's all over, the 'Emperor Denis' adds Spain to his Empire, but Sanchez serves warning that home resistance is strong; it may be different orange-clad adventurers which takes the spoils in the next battle for Spain. Meanwhile, Magnus talks to us for the last time, before he goes on his travels...

As it becomes increasingly likely that Rabobank's 'Russian Emperor', Denis Menchov will be crowned in Madrid on Sunday, the lesser knights continue to joust for lesser, but still desirable trophies.

The All-Rounder

On the penultimate occasion we spoke to the Swedish road race champion, he had been playing the roll of 'baroudeur', the last time we spoke, he was a 'chrono-man', now he's a 'sprinteur' with three top drawer finishes, right-up there with Zabel, Petacchi, Bennati and all !

The Time Triallin' Machine

It all seems a long time ago now, but when we spoke to Magnus on Friday night, he said if his legs felt good, then he would 'go for it' in Saturday's time trial. He did just that, leading early and finishing an eventual fifth behind stage-winner, Bert Grabsch.

The first time we rang Magnus on the Monday after the Vuelta finished, his manager, Martin McCrossan answered - the Big Guy was still asleep. I guess he's due a long-ly after all those kilometres around Espana.

Have a few beers, do a bit of shopping, take in a movie....

pezcyclingnews.com, Edmond Hood, 6 September 2006

Well, there's nothing else to do, is there? After all, it is a 'rest day'. But what to do first? (Me, I vote for a few Bavarias) But maybe we'd better ask Magnus....

Pezcyclingnews.com, Gordan Cameron, 1 February 2006

Cycling has never had a great number of blond Viking giants with disarming Swedish/Welsh/Liverpool accents, so Magnus Backstedt would stand out even if he wasn’t one of the nicer guys in the pro peloton. PEZ checked in with Magnus to find out how another UK winter has treated him...
