Patrick Calcagni non è proprio un novellino del ciclismo professionistico, è un tipo che in bicicletta lavora nell'ombra, e lo fa anche bene. È nato a Soregno, una frazione collinare nei pressi di Lugano che ha dato i natali anche alla showgirl Michelle Hunzicher ed all'ex ciclista Wladimir Belli.

In his first year as a pro, aged just 22, Patrick Calcagni won his national Time Trial Championship. In 2005 the former Vini Caldirola rider from Sorengo, Switzerland, joined Liquigas where he has evolved into a 'super-domestique' within the squad, a role he enjoys.
