Il est passé tout proche de la victoire ce dimanche à Jussac sur la première étape du Critérium du Dauphiné. Grand homme des classiques de printemps avec notamment une deuxième place sur Milan-San Remo derrière Julian Alaphilippe, Oliver Naesen a confirmé sa belle saison.

Vorig jaar was zijn grote doorbraakjaar. Na zijn Belgische titel in juni werd hij zelfs het gedroomde uithangbord voor een nieuwe lichting vaderlandse wielrenners genoemd. Zeggen dat het snel gaat voor Oliver Naesen, is een understatement. Vier jaar geleden werkte de 26-jarige Oost-Vlaming nog als koerier voor een wasserij.

Mi objetivo no era convertirme en profesional cuando era joven, porque parecía poco realista pensar eso. Incluso, antes de mi paso como stagiaire de Lotto en el verano de 2014, estaba 99% seguro de que no iba a ninguna parte con el ciclismo. Era un buen amateur y punto

“Turning pro wasn’t a goal when I was younger, simply because it was so unrealistic. Before my trainee period with Lotto (summer 2014), I was 99% sure I was going nowhere in cycling, 1% you never know. A good amateur, that’s what I thought I was and nothing could be done about it.”
