Tom Danielson interview part II: Targeting big performances in Langkawi and beyond

As detailed in part I of this interview, Tom Danielson heads into the 2012 season with greater focus and confidence than in the past. Taking eighth in last year’s Tour de France was a major moment for him and, as he explained then, has affected his mentality in a number of ways, not least his motivation.

Over the course of a ten to fifteen year pro career, riders can develop in different directions to how they were as young professionals. Some such as Sean Kelly and Laurent Jalabert metamorphose from sprinters into strong all-rounders, with both of those riders winning the Vuelta a Espana during their careers.

Garmin-Cervélo’s Tom Danielson put in an impressive ride on Sierra Road Wednesday, finishing fifth on the summit finish to move into third overall, behind RadioShack’s Chris Horner and Levi Leipheimer.

Tom Danielson was back in the winner’s column last weekend with victory in the individual time trial at the five-day Vuelta a Burgos in Spain. It marked Danielson’s first European victory since 2006 and the end of a long comeback from the injuries that nearly derailed his career.

Tom Danielson was the leader of Team Slipstream-Chipotle Presented by H30 at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, his first race after back pains forced him out of the fourth stage of the Amgen Tour of California in February. I caught up with him before the fast and furious criterium in downtown Redlands.

Tom Danielson has had a tough year but is pretty sure things are on the road to getting better after his injury in the Vuelta! He had surgery on his shoulder Tuesday in Durango, Colorado and was ready to head home from the hospital Wednesday night.
