Kristoff saved Katusha in 2014

Katusha general manager Viatcheslav Ekimov has admitted that Alexander Kristoff's breakthrough season saved the team’s blushes in 2014. The Norwegian won 14 of the team’s 25 victories in 2014 including the rain-swept Milan-San Remo and two stages of the Tour de France.

We managed to catch up with DS Viatcheslav Ekimov on the week-end before he headed to Granada on Wednesday to prepare for the start of the Vuelta. We asked him about the race plan, the riders to watch and to comment on the successful season Team Astana has enjoyed.

It's said that all good things must come to an end, and so the cycling career of Viatcheslav Ekimov has reached a natural conclusion as Eki announced his retirement at the 2006 Tour de France. With a career spanning more than twenty-five years, Ekimov has seen it all.

Last year, Viatcheslav Ekimov had an accident in Austin while training with Lance that ended his season until the very last few weeks. This year, he hopes it will be much better and that he will stay focused, avoid crashes...and black cats crossing the road.

Only one rider has been there to see Armstrong, Pantani, Ullrich, Indurain, Riis and Lemond all stand on the top step wearing the Maillot Jeune at the close of the race. That rider is, of course, Discovery Channel’s Viatcheslav Ekimov.

After taking the amateur cycling world by storm, Viatcheslav Ekimov looked for new challenges in 1990 as he decided to turn professional in the sport of road cycling. Opting to not join the Russian professional team in its first year of existence, Eki looked for a strong, well-established squad where he could learn and grow in his early years riding as a professional.

Quarant'anni compiuti il 4 febbraio, professionista dal 1990, dal 1997 alla Us Postal prima (con una parentesi nel 1999 all'Amica Chips) e alla Discovery Channel poi. Si divide tra la casa in Spagna e quella a San Pietroburgo, la "Venezia della Russia". Sentiamo cos'ha da dire questo decano sul Giro d'Italia e sulla propria carriera.

On the second day of Discovery Channel Team training camp, I had the opportunity to sit down with Eki and talk about training, the team, and yes, even that infamous hand gesture from Stage 20 of the 2004 Tour de France.
