Approaching a cobbled stage at the Tour de France should be treated in the same way you would approach a mountain stage, according to Britain’s former Classics hardman Roger Hammond, and only the under-prepared should fear the pavé.

When Roger Hammond headed to Belgium last month he hoped for a few strong showings in the events preceding this weekend's Spring Classic Paris-Roubaix race and yesterday he charged home at Gent-Wevelgem in second place behind teammate Marcus Burghart.

2004 saw British rider Roger Hammond take a fine 3rd place at the 'Hell of the North'. 2005 saw him move onto the Discovery Channel team aiming to improve on his result on the pavé, but for 2007 he is moving onto the German T-Mobile team where he is looking to put the difficulties of the past behind him and start afresh.

One of the key riders in the Great Britain Elite Men’s team for Sunday’s road race is former double British champion and the Silver medallist from this year, Roger Hammond. British pro Roger Hammond had hoped for a great 2005 after a breakthrough ride to the podium in the 2004 Paris-Roubaix and a contract with Discovery Channel. It didn't turn out quite the way he expected, with Roubaix derailed by bad luck and a planned world championship attack botched by team politics. Undaunted, the ever-optimistic Hammond is now looking forward to 2006

Roger Hammond, double British National Champion (Road and Cyclo Cross), would seem to be a rider ideally suited for the Belgium Classics. He has been riding professionally in Belgium since 1998 and his results have been steadily improving.
