Meet Your New National Champion of Cyclocross

Last weekend, 22-year-old Clara Honsinger did what no woman has done in 15 years: She beat Katie Compton at U.S. Cyclocross National Championships. But as she waited at the Denver Airport on Wednesday, she told Bicycling that she still considers Compton the “world’s greatest cyclocross racer,” and seems as thrilled with passing her final exams for the semester—she’s working toward a degree in nutrition—as she was about winning the race.

On Sunday, Clara Honsinger became the first new Elite Women’s Cyclocross National Champion in 15 years but talking to her about the accomplishment, you wouldn’t know this was her first attempt at the Elite title. At the age of 22, she’s insightful and reflective beyond her years.

The Oregonian came into the 2019 domestic season flying, finishing second in the C1 at Rochester Cyclocross and then repeating the feat a day later. A week later at the Jingle Cross World Cup, she joined the lead trio and took third for her first Elite World Cup podium.
