Springtime in the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara, California brings wildflowers, wine festivals and lots and lots of cyclists. When my cycling friends alerted me that Andy Hampsten and friends would be cycling in my area for a week, I knew I had to request an interview. Meeting one afternoon in a coffee shop, we sat and chatted for over an hour and a half. Talking with Andy is like reading a history book on cycling. Not only did he create his own place in history by being the only American to ever win the Giro, but he rode with legends and icons in cycling and these are people he calls friends today. You'll meet no nicer former Pro than Andy Hampsten, and his casual attitude toward his accomplishments was indeed refreshing.
