On moving to BMC and riding for Richie Porte

CyclingTips, Matt de Neef, 31 January 2018
Posted by: Bitossi

Simon Gerrans doesn’t give much away. A decade and a half in the sporting spotlight has taught him it’s best to say as much as he needs to, but not a whole lot more. Speaking over the phone from the Victorian seaside town of Torquay he’s polite, friendly but above all, professional.

Simon Gerrans is a two-time national road race champion and three time winner of the Tour Down Under title. He knows how to find form in January and he has hopes of another good showing in the Australian round of the WorldTour… but first he’s coming to terms with what he saw Jack Bobridge do in the nationals on Sunday. Rob Arnold spoke to the 35-year-old from Orica-GreenEdge to get his take on a the winning ride in Buninyong…

Simon Gerrans admits his chances of world championship success have all but disappeared

Herald Sun, Sam Edmund, 26 November 2015

Gerrans boasts one of the most glittering palmares in Australian cycling history; a dual national champion who has won stages at the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, and saluted at two monuments — Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Milan-San Remo.

Simon Gerrans may have fallen into cycling by accident, but his success ever since has been the product of determination, and unwavering commitment. Now with a stage win in each Grand Tour -the only Australian to do so- and a coveted two day stint in the Tour de France yellow jersey, Gerrans is a bone fide Australian success story.

I’ll set my sights for a little bit later in the season.

Onto the trails of Mount Buller went the reigning national champion, Simon Gerrans. It was an afternoon training session along with a few locals… and then down he crashed. A broken collarbone means Orica-GreenEdge is looking at different options for January. A day after his surgery, Gerrans spoke to RIDE about the crash and his amended plans for the start of 2015.

Simon Gerrans is fully recovered from the hip fracture he incurred during the third stage of this year's Vuelta, an injury that later saw him withdraw from the race and put his World Title ambitions on the shelf for another year. With his 2014 season subsequently brought forward by a month he is now back training with renewed vigour, with an Ardennes Classic and a rainbow jersey standing as the remaining red rags to his bullish motivation. Gerrans has also been buoyed in recent weeks by the announcement that Orica GreenEdge have signed Simon and Adam Yates, Esteban Chaves and Caleb Ewan.

Gerrans backed off again in order to peak for the Tour. While he had a quiet ride in the Critérium du Dauphiné, he is confident that he has timed things right and should be in very good condition for the Tour de France. He’s got big aims there.

With the Orica-GreenEdge line-up for the 2014 Tour de France due to be announced in the coming days we can safely assume that one of the nine will be the Australian champion, Simon Gerrans. On the night of his victory in the 100th edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Simon Gerrans celebrated on the team bus and then jumped on a flight back to his home in Monaco. A mini off-season would start the next day. His Classics campaign for 2014 had a successful ending. But this is a rider who always seems to conjure another item to tick off his to-do list. Monument won, now it’s time to prepare for Le Tour… this is the sentiment of a pragmatist. On the Tuesday morning after ‘La Doyenne‘ he was looking after his kids and he put 15 minutes aside to talk about what had recently happened.
