On Thursday, aged just 29, the Tasmanian and his One Pro Cycling team announced that he had taken the decision to retire.

I feel more and more confident.

‘Retiring wasn’t an option’: what the move to MTN-Qhubeka means to Matt Goss.

Late last week South African-based Professional Continental team MTN-Qhubeka announced the latest in a series of high-profile signings: Tasmanian Matt Goss. Jane Aubrey caught up with Goss after the announcement was made, to find out how the 27-year-old has seen his past three years at Orica-GreenEdge and what he's expecting of his move to MTN-Qhubeka.

Matt Goss has become an easy target for derision. As head sprinter for Orica-GreenEDGE he is there to win sprint stages at the Tour de France, but his tally stands at zero. He took a stage at the Giro d'Italia in 2012, a stage at Tirreno-Adriatico in 2013, but on the whole, his first two years at GreenEDGE have not lived up to the billing of a marquee Australian sprinter on an Australian team.

The next two goals, Tirreno - Adriatico and Milan - San Remo

I'm counting down to my next race which means it's time for another blog. Tirreno - Adriatico is always a good gauge of your form, especially before the Classics and I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't checked out the stages too much yet. I've had a good period through Oman and training here afterwards. I went to Lugano and unfortunately it was snowed out there so we didn't get to race but looking at Tirreno, it's always good racing. There are a lot of GC guys going this year so it could be quite a hard race.

Matthew Goss was de verrassende winnaar van Milaan-Sanremo. Vorig jaar zegevierde de Australiër al in de GP Plouay, maar Milaan-Sanremo is zijn echte doorbraak naar de absolute wereldtop.

When you're a crucial part of a top sprinter's train and the boss goes awol on you in the last 300 metres, there's not much else to do but try for the win yourself - unfortunately for Columbia's Matt Goss, Garmin's Tyler Farrar was just that little bit quicker in Utrecht on Sunday.
