Mark Cavendish won his thirty-third Tour de France stage on Tuesday, the man who shepherded him to the finish line was Michael Mørkøv. Ed Hood caught up with the fast Dane on Monday’s rest day to hear about history in the making.

Sam Bennett was piloted to another Vuelta a España stage win on Thursday’s stage 9 by Michael Mørkøv, but the UCI had other ideas. Ed Hood managed to ‘have a word’ with the best lead-out in the business on the Vuelta’s first rest day, before Bennett’s second victory was taken from him.

The all round star, Michael Mørkøv, has added another title to his palmarès - World Madison Champion, for the second time. At the recent championships in Berlin, partnered by fellow Dane Lasse Norman Hansen, Mørkøv took the rainbow colours. Ed Hood caught up with his old mate to hear all about it.

Michael Mørkøv is one of those rare beasts that can ride a full road season, including grand Tours and win on the indoor boards at the highest level. Ed Hood is an old '6 Days' colleague of the great Dane and managed to have a word before the 2020 training starts.

he last time we spoke to Denmark and Saxo Bank’s Michael Mørkøv – after he’d won a dramatic Vuelta stage – we said that perhaps it was time to stop referring to him as a ‘Six Day star.’ We were right.

The last time we spoke to Danish Six Day star Michael Mørkøv was back in June after he’d pulled off a brilliant but unexpected win in the Danish Elite Road Race Championships for his Saxo-Tinkoff team. And he’s done it again – this time taking a beautiful stage win in the Vuelta, outsprinting the entire peloton to win Stage Six on the day when Tony Martin (QuickStep & Germany) came close to pulling off what would have been one of the all time great Grand Tour stage wins. Perhaps it’s time to stop calling Michael a ‘Six Day star’ . . .

It was after the Giro when we last spoke to Saxo Bank’s Michael Morkov; just after he helped team mate Alberto Contador to a crushing victory. Since then he’s stood on the podium of his home tour and come very close to a stage win in Colorado. We spoke to the 26 year-old from Kokkedal on the eve of his flying to Canada for the UCi races in Quebec and Montreal – where he would actually win the one kilometre road sprints competition held on the eve of the Quebec race.

It seems like yesterday that Denmark’s Michael Mørkøv was a youngster tackling his first six day race in Grenoble and hoping that one day he’d ‘make it.’ He had nothing to worry about. PEZ caught up with the ever improving Dane following teammate Nick Nuyens' win at Flanders on Sunday.

Dozens of SMS and emails flash up on my BlackBerry each day, most are chaff and get deleted after a quick glance – but when one comes in to tell me that ‘Michael Morkov excluded from the Vuelta by WADA’ that makes me take notice. There’s only one thing to do – call the man himself.

It hasn't been a bad autumn and winter for Danish greyhound, Michael Morkov. An Olympic team pursuit silver, two six day wins (Grenoble & Copenhagen) a contract with Saxo Bank, and now - a rainbow jersey; all achieved with best friend and fellow Saxo Bank man, Alex Rasmussen.

Four or five seasons ago, I was Michael Morkov's 'runner' at the Grenoble six. The young Dane and his partner, Alex Rasmussen were, 'up and coming' back then; but Rolf Sorensen told me that Michael was going all the way to the top...and he was right!
