PEZ Talk: Champion System's Craig Lewis

Craig Lewis (Champion System) is no stranger to bad crashes; in 2004, whilst riding for TIAA-CREF in the Tour of Georgia, he was hit by a motor vehicle – breaking 47 bones. Last season, on stage 19 of the Giro, he and HTC team mate Marco Pinotti were involved in a bad crash and were rushed to hospital. Ed Hood recently caught up with the Boulder, Colorado resident after a stage win at the Tour de Beauce.

Two of America’s most promising young riders made impressive grand tour debuts during the Giro d’Italia. Brent Bookwalter (BMC) and Craig Lewis (HTC-Columbia) each made it to Verona on Sunday in a remarkably challenging and grueling Giro d’Italia as each man’s first three-week stage race.

George Hincapie pulled on the champion’s jersey after the USPRO Championships last weekend, but he had a little help from Craig Lewis, who was laid up in hospital with Swine Flu just days before the race, but hauled himself out of bed and onto his Scott to do a job for his friend, mentor and teammate.

T-Mobile Team newcomer Craig Lewis is widely tipped in American cycling circles as the 'next big thing'. US U23 Road Race Champion in 2006, the 22 year old South Carolina native has already impressed this Fall with top 10 finishes at the Tour of Ireland and the Tour de l'Avenir.
