PEZ Talk: Mike Friedman

One of the results which was lost in the pre-Tour de France frenzy was the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota in June; a staple on the US calendar going back to 1999 with names like Chris Horner, Greg Henderson, Robert Forster and Gordon Fraser all in there as stage winners. This year the man who came out on top after the six stages was a surprise, but a welcome one; Mike Friedman (Optum powered by Kelly Benefit Strategies) back on top after a long absence from the top step of the podium. Friedman started off on the track and was a member of the winning team in the US team pursuit championship in 2005 – a feat he repeated a year later in the colours of TiAA/CREF. The 2006 season also saw him lift the US individual pursuit and madison titles – as well as enjoying a spell in the leader’s jersey in Ireland’s tough Ras stage race.

US Olympian Mike Friedman, one-half of the USA's Madison team with Bobby Lea, is excited about going to the Olympics... very excited. Normally racing on the road for the Garmin-Chipotle, he was part of Jonathan Vaughters' track plan since 2006 to get the USA an Olympic medal.

Mike Friedman is a 26 year old racer for Team Garmin-Chipotle H30. He first slipped across most people's radar screens with a great performance in the long breakaway at this year's Het Volk, where he eventually held on for 12th.

On the eve of his first try at Paris-Roubaix’s infamous pave´, Mike Friedman understandably has a few butterflies in his stomach. The 25-year-old Pennsylvanian, affectionately called “Meatball”, is one of his team’s chief lieutenants for its captain, 2004 Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt.

When American Mike Friedman takes to the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Los Angeles for the qualifying round of the men's World Cup scratch race Saturday afternoon, he'll do so with the confidence that comes with winning a gold medal at the previous round in Beijing, China, in December.

More than just saddle sores...

I got a call from Mike Friedman the other day. He was pretty upset. He told me he wasn't going to be able to do any world cups. He wasn't going to go worlds, he wasn't going to ride Paris Roubaix. I asked him what was wrong. It turns out our boy is pretty sick right now.
