After 16 years in the professional peloton, Australia’s Graeme Brown has called time on his career. It’s been a long and illustrious career, with Olympic gold medals on the track, many a sprint victory on the road, and plenty of great memories to boot. Brown sat down with reporter Aaron S. Lee to reflect on his career, discuss his lone regret, and look to his final race: Graeme’s Last Lap.

After such a long stint in cycling's top tier, it must have taken Graeme Brown a bit of getting used to being back at Pro Continental level, but the Australian has been relishing it.

Woensdag 1 december vond de presentatie van de Rabobank ploegen voor 2011 plaats in de Efteling. Terwijl het gros van de renners meer met elkaar sprak dan met overige belangstellenden, zaten Graeme Brown en Tom Leezer in de buurt van de bar klaar voor een gesprek.

De Raboploeg haalde maandagmiddag zijn eerste prijs in deze Giro d'Italia binnen. De rode puntentrui voor Graeme Brown, die ondanks een prima sprint tweede werd in Middelburg. Zelf was de Australiër een uurtje na de finish nog niet al te uitbundig over de rode trui.

Graeme Brown was op verzoek van Oscar Freire aan de Giro-ploeg toegevoegd, maar na het wegvallen van de Spanjaard is de Australiër ineens sprinter nummer een in het team. De Giro veranderde donderdag op slag voor Brown.

Until recently, Graeme Brown was considered to be something of an underachiever as a top-level road sprinter. At least that was the thinking of the managers at his Dutch Rabobank team until he pulled off three impressive end-of-season wins.

Graeme has eight Tour de Langkawi stage wins to his credit (a record for the race), has worn the sprinters jersey in the Giro d’Italia and a stage win in the Tour Down Under in his palmares amongst many other highlights, but until his recent victory in the ProTour, Tour of Germany Graeme was yet to win on the continent.

After a promising first year as a neo-pro that saw him contest Grand Tour stage victories with Mario Cipollini and Robbie McEwen, Graeme Brown's career on the road has fallen off the pace. An obstinate Achilles, internal rivalry within his trade team and a poorly planned race schedule all contributed to his lack of success, but a chance meeting with a fellow Australian has led to a new team and new hopes.
