Emma Pooley was spotted after her fourth place at the British National Road Race in 2005 and soon signed for Team Fat Birds UK. Pooley has had several successes on the road including first in the Rund um Schönaich in 2007 as well as the Trofeo Alfredo Binda in 2008.

"It's just like at any other race really"
Nicole Cooke took up cycling at an early age and became the youngest ever woman to win the national road race the age of 16. Cooke went on to win La Flèche Wallonne and the World Cup before becoming a professional with the Ausra-Gruodis Safi squad.

Yet another young talent brought through the GB Olympic Academy Programme, Steven Burke's specialisation is the team pursuit. Steven took his first medal at the 2005 European Junior Championships, again in the team pursuit, although is as of yet unproven in the top flight.

Ross Edgar started his career as a senior with the GB team and has been a successful member of the squad. Starting at the World Cycling School in Switzerland, Edgar has since moved to Manchester permanently and his long-term aspiration is to win a gold medal in Beijing.

"It all looks really impressive"
Jamie Staff began his career riding BMX, but aspired to win an Olympic medal. As it was not yet an Olympic sport at that point, Staff turned to the track and qualified instantly for the GB Cycling Team, going on to win a gold in the team pursuit at the 2002 Worlds.

"I always smile"
Wendy Houvenaghel, like many of the British Olympians, manages to combine track and road riding but specialises in the former. A late developer, it was not until 2005 that Wendy competed at World level, winning the track World Cup in the 3km individual pursuit.
