At half way into the Tour of Italy, Spanish climber Joaquim Rodriguez took the lead after winning the steep uphill stage finish in the narrow streets of Assisi leading up to the famous San Francesco basilica. “Purito” (his nickname: little cigar) also installed himself as a favorite for the overall victory whereas he was just an underdog previously after having missed out on a few occasions to finish on the podium of a Grand Tour, mostly due to his lack of competitiveness against the clock.
