The 2008 world champion Alessandro Ballan from BMC had a crack at the Santos Tour Down Under last year, finishing 11th, one position out of the World Tour points scoring zone. He aims for more on the eve of Stage 1 of the Australian event, which is the inaugural race of the 2012 international season. His team has another card to play though, with the debut of Paris-Tours winner Greg Van Avermaet.
