Igor Astarloa (28 ans) a commencé à se distinguer en 2002 en obtenant des places d’honneur sur différentes classiques et plus précisément à Hambourg, Liège-Bastogne-Liège et l’Amstel Gold Race.
En 2002 chez Saeco, il prend une autre dimension en terminant sur la deuxième marche du podium à Hambourg et à San Sebastian. Il se classe aussi 4e du Mondial. Il obtient l’apothéose en 2003 en devenant champion du monde après avoir épinglé la Flèche Wallonne à son palmarès.
