Lorsqu’il avait remporté le Trophée Laigueglia en 2005, on avait considéré que Kim Kirchen était arrivé très tôt en forme. La suite de sa saison fut de bonne qualité, puisqu’il remporta également le Grand Prix de Chiasso et termina deuxième de la Flèche Wallonne (derrière l’Italien Danilo Di Luca). Après un abandon dans le Tour de France (mal de dos), il remporta de belle manière le Tour de Pologne. Aujourd’hui, Kim Kirchen (36 ans), jeune retraité du cyclisme toujours attentif à son sport, commente régulièrement avec Tom Flammang sur RTL Télévision.
