Il primo italiano a vincere la Doyenne, era un emigrante ("dalla Campania a 13 anni per seguire mio padre che lavorava nelle miniere intorno Charleroi") e ripercorre quei momenti: "Eravamo stravolti dopo sette ore sotto l'acqua, al freddo. C'era Adorni, lo feci passare, mi misi alla sua ruota, lo superai negli ultimi venti metri"
