Si en el próximo Tour de Francia consigue ganar su séptimo maillot de la montaña, Richard Virenque batirá el récord que actualmente comparte con Federico Martín Bahamontes y Lucien Van Impe. Curiosamente, Lance Armstrong también tiene la oportunidad de superar la plusmarca de victorias totales en la misma edición. Sin embargo, en opinión del escalador francés, Miguel Indurain ha hecho más méritos como campeón que el estadounidense.
