La historia de Jonathan Lastra con el ciclismo de carretera es tardía y se podría decir que hasta atípica. Se dio a conocer en ciclocross, donde logró varios títulos en categoría Sub 23 y fue seleccionado para el Mundial de 2013 – de esa misma categoría – que se disputó en Kentucky. Hasta ahí – según reconoce el propio Lastra – no se había planteado dar el salto al ciclismo profesional de carretera.
