José Antonio Hermida
Olympic Games - take three

cyclingnews.com, 9 August 2008
José Antonio Hermida won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece four years ago. Now he's got his eyes on a gold medal in Beijing, China. Hermida will be counting on experience and hoping for a little good luck at his third Olympic Games.

Step by step
Even though this year's Tour de France was quite a successful one for French teams with three stage wins and a showing in the yellow jersey, the best Frenchmen in General Classification did not make it into the top 10.

Judith Arndt
cyclingnews.com,
7 August 2008

Turning silver to gold
As the silver medallist from Athens in 2004 - and after a dominant first half season - Judith Arndt of Germany and Team Columbia goes into the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games race as one of the overwhelming favourites.

Christian Pfannberger
teambarloworld.com,
6 August 2008

"I love Italian cycling"
After an impressive first part of the 2008 season, Austria's Christian Pfannberger won his second Austrian Championship in June and took other important results in the summer. He will ride the Olympic road race in Beijing and is determined to be a medal contender.

Emma Davies Jones
pezcyclingnews.com,
6 August 2008

"It is still a very male-dominated world"
I offered to take Eurosport commentator and pro bike racer Emma Davies Jones to the finish of stage 19 on the Tour and I managed to get a few questions in during the journey…

Bert Roesems
pezcyclingnews.com,
4 August 2008

"it's better that you win than finish second"
Bert was the victim of a high speed, pelvis breaking crash in last year's Vuelta, it's been a long, difficult year for him, but recent signs of form have been encouraging. We rang to ask about how he's feeling; his team mate Cadel Evans and - the 'D word.'

Taylor Tolleson
bmcracingteam.com,
4 August 2008

"Crashes happen"
In late June, Talyor Tolleson accompanied several of his team mates to the Tour de Nez in order to hone his form for races a little later in the season but after barely 30 minutes of racing, a rider crashed right into Taylor, taking him down and breaking his collarbone.

David Zabriskie
cyclingnews.com,
4 August 2008

Zabriskie optimistic for Olympic success
The 29 year-old from Salt Lake City is the current U.S. time trial champion, a stage winner in all three Grand Tours and one of the best moustache growers on his Garmin-Chipotle team. But along with his accomplishments have been a string of injuries at inopportune moments.

Shanaze Reade
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"it's as if you have landed on Mars"
Shanaze Reade was a world champion in two disciplines in 2007. In only her second ever track event she teamed up with Victoria Pendleton to win the inaugural 500-meter team sprint world title in March. Then, in July, she won the elite women's final at the BMX World Championships in Canada.

Emma Pooley
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"I can't just sit around, eating pie!"
Emma Pooley was spotted after her fourth place at the British National Road Race in 2005 and soon signed for Team Fat Birds UK. Pooley has had several successes on the road including first in the Rund um Schönaich in 2007 as well as the Trofeo Alfredo Binda in 2008.

Nicole Cooke
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"It's just like at any other race really"
Nicole Cooke took up cycling at an early age and became the youngest ever woman to win the national road race the age of 16. Cooke went on to win La Flèche Wallonne and the World Cup before becoming a professional with the Ausra-Gruodis Safi squad.

Steven Burke
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"Just my laptop and my iPod"
Yet another young talent brought through the GB Olympic Academy Programme, Steven Burke's specialisation is the team pursuit. Steven took his first medal at the 2005 European Junior Championships, again in the team pursuit, although is as of yet unproven in the top flight.

Ross Edgar
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"I want to be World champion"
Ross Edgar started his career as a senior with the GB team and has been a successful member of the squad. Starting at the World Cycling School in Switzerland, Edgar has since moved to Manchester permanently and his long-term aspiration is to win a gold medal in Beijing.

Chris Hoy
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"I am very good at wasting time"
As a teenager Chris Hoy rode mountain bikes, time trials, road and track. Since turning senior however, Chris has decided to focus his efforts on the track where he has been prolific, winning many titles.

Jamie Staff
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"It all looks really impressive"
Jamie Staff began his career riding BMX, but aspired to win an Olympic medal. As it was not yet an Olympic sport at that point, Staff turned to the track and qualified instantly for the GB Cycling Team, going on to win a gold in the team pursuit at the 2002 Worlds.

Wendy Houvenaghel
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"I always smile"
Wendy Houvenaghel, like many of the British Olympians, manages to combine track and road riding but specialises in the former. A late developer, it was not until 2005 that Wendy competed at World level, winning the track World Cup in the 3km individual pursuit.

Oli Beckingsale
cyclingweekly.co.uk,
1 August 2008

"It would be nice to go there on a holiday rather than for a bike race"
Beijing will be Oli Beckingsale's third Olympics, having already competed at Sydney and Athens, coming 17th in Greece.
