Japanese riders have competed in the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France before but none had started the Vuelta a España until Yukihiro Doi lined up on the beach of Benidorm for the inaugural team time trial of the 66th edition that Skil-Shimano successfully completed in seventh place.

Surprised to be in Red
The leader's jersey of the Vuelta a España was yellow and called maillot amarillo when Lars Michaelson wore it for four days in 1997. Riding for TVM, he won the first stage of the Vuelta that started in Lisbon and finished on the car racing circuit of Estoril in Portugal.

Parce que son Tour de France n’a pas été à la hauteur de ses attentes, blessé et amoindri par une luxation acromio claviculaire droite, le Champion de France a modifié son programme et est donc bien avec l’équipe Quick Step et Tom Boonen au départ de cette Vuelta.
