History

[EN] The Grand Prix Miguel Indurain (Spanish: Gran Premio Miguel Indurain) is a Spanish one-day road bicycle race in the spanish region Navarra

[EN] The race was inaugurated in 1951 under the name Campeonato Vasco Navarro de Montaña, but was limited to local competition. In 1968 it was renamed as the Gran Premio Navarra and renamed again in 1989 to Trofeo Comunidad Foral de Navarra. In 1998 the race was rebranded after the five times Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain. In 2005, with the introduction of the UCI Europe Tour, the race was upgraded to a 1.1 event. In 2007 the race was further upgraded to a 1.HC event. These higher grades have attracted an increasingly competitive and international field of racers.
The race often loops through the city of Estella-Lizarra, in the Navarra Area. The modern race always includes several challenging climbs and thus tends to favor a fast all-rounder, rather than a climber or a pure sprinter.
