The 23-year-old Welshman, who turned pro with Team Sky at the start of 2012, will roll out in Vilanova de Arousa on Saturday (August 24) for the start of the 68th edition of Spain’s national tour. Rowe, who raced as part of Team Sky’s Classics squad in the spring, and has competed in a series of prestigious week-long stage races this season, including the Tours of Switzerland and the Basque Country, said he was ready to take on his first three-week race.

Luke Rowe will make his debut as a professional cyclist this weekend for Team Sky. The Welshman has been signed on a mandatory two-year deal for neo-pro’s after coming through the British cycling development ranks following in the footsteps of Ben Swift and Ian Stannard.

Early this morning, Luke Rowe proudly showed off his Team Sky kit that he can now wear as part of the team, his first after three years in the GB Academy. He says “I can’t wait to get racing. As soon as I found out I was going to get an opportunity to ride for Sky, I have been waiting for January to come so I can we can get started.”

It’s not every day that a GB rider wins a Netherlands amateur classic; but that’s exactly what 19 year-old Welshman Luke Rowe did recently in De ‘arjaan De Schipper Trofee’ – to give it the full Dutch treatment - a race won by a certain Fabian Cancellara, a few years ago.
