The late 70s and early 80s was a great time for cycling, there were many ‘heroes of the road’, not just Eddy Merckx, but a load of Belgians and Italians. Johan De Muynck was a classy rider, but he was up against the system that kept the top men… at the top. De Muynck should have had a much bigger palmarès – he didn’t do too badly, Ed Hood finds out more.

Ontsnappen aan het mistroostige fabrieksleven, dat was zijn drijfveer om te koersen. De pedalen zagen hem graag komen. In 1978 won Johan De Muynck de Giro. Maar de Meetjeslander maakte ook kennis met de keerzijde van de medaille. Heroïek en dramatiek gaan hand in hand.
