Not so long ago Ben Swift was just another rider in the British development program. Early in the 2014 season, he’s winning alongside others who were part of the system that was managed by the likes of Rod Ellingworth. At the recent Coppi/Bartali Week, Swift picked up two wins on day one: a road stage, followed by a team time trial together with British Sky team-mate Peter Kennaugh who went on to win the overall title.

Kristoff was no surprise to us – especially with Paolini as his wingman; Cancellara – enough said. But the man on the third step of the podium was a big – and it must be said, pleasant – surprise, Sky’s Ben Swift, back from the wilderness. Last season was compromised by injury picked up in 2012 and subsequent surgery but there were green shoots of recovery to be seen at the start of this season – two podiums and a top ten in Nokere.

When Team Sky line-up on the start line for this year's Milan-Sanremo, the first of the season's five 'monuments' of cycling, one rider from their classics squad will be watching the action from his sofa. After being selected for the 10-man squad alongside Edvald Boasson Hagen, Bernhard Eisel, Mathew Hayman, Vasil Kiryienka, Salvatore Puccio, Gabriel Rasch, Luke Rowe, Kanstantsin Siutsou, Ian Stannard, Chris Sutton and Geraint Thomas, Yorkshireman Ben Swift was forced to cut short his time on Team Sky's recent training camp in Tenerife after an injury sustained during last month's Mallorca Challenge flared up to threaten his involvement in the spring classics.
