Born to a sporting family, Taylor grew up in the ideal environment to become a high profile cyclist. Young and very talented, he is certainly the new face of American cycling. After a very bad crash in 2014 we didn’t see much of the American rider this year, but he managed to come back to the highest level with a perfect timing: he won the Team Time Trial gold at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond last September with BMC Racing Team. It is time to get to know him a little better.

The man handling interviews for USA Cycling tells me I’ll have just 20 minutes with the 24-year-old Boulder, Colorado, native and Team BMC standout. On my mind, of course, is Phinney’s horrific season-ending crash at U.S. road nationals last May in which he broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He looked good out on the bike today, so I’m curious how well his recovery has gone.

A man who we mentioned in our Paris-Roubaix preview as a possible podium finisher was BMC’s 22 year-old powerhouse, Taylor Phinney. We’d expected the big man from Boulder, Colorado to improve upon last year’s 15th place, but it was not to be. PEZ spoke to Phinney upon his return to the US and once he’d had a chance to reflect upon the race which he’s won twice in the U23 ranks.
But before we see what he had to say, it’s perhaps useful to remind ourselves of the rich palmares he’s accrued already in his young life. It was 2006 when his name first appeared in the record books as bronze medallist in the US Junior Cyclo-Cross Championships and silver medallist in the Junior Time Trial Championship. A year later he was Junior Time Trial Champion of the World, having relegated a certain John Degenkolb to silver and won the ‘Junior Tour de France,’ Canada’s Tour de l’Abitibi.
Taylor Phinney didn’t collect a cobble, but learned much from a day on the pave.

Taylor Phinney ended the Tour of Oman on a high note, taking third in the final sprint and helping the BMC Racing Team to win the overall team prize of the race.
The 22-year-old American rode both the Tour of Qatar and the Tour of Oman, chasing stage victories and more importantly, a fat base of form and race miles to use as a foundation for his assault on the spring Classics.

'A person, especially a child, of unusual or marvellous talents' is one dictionary definition of a 'prodigy' - a term often applied to Taylor Phinney. In October, Colorado cyclist Taylor Phinney competed in his first event on the track, winning the U.S. National Championship at the age of 17 in the individual pursuit. Last month, competing in the event for only the fourth time, he won gold at the UCI World Cup Classics in Los Angeles.
