A consistent improver over the last couple of years has been RadioShack’s Matthew Busche. With him on the eve of starting just his second Grand Tour tomorrow we thought it was a good time to catch up with the Wisconsin native about his excellent 2013 season so far and his hopes for the Vuelta. Winning the US Pro Championship title in 2011 is one testimony to the rapid progress Matthew Busche has made since taking up the sport of cycling. A former college runner, he cycled as cross training but it was only in 2008 when he started to concentrate on two wheel competitions.

Having helped his Radioshack Nissan-Trek teammate Tiago Machado into second place overall on stage three of the Volta ao Algarve in Portugal yesterday, Matthew Busche took some time out at the start of stage 4 today to reflect on his European season thus far.

At the beginning of the 2009 season Matthew Busche was riding as an amateur in the US, then Kelly Benefits snapped him up, he rode a mere four races for them before Johan Bruyneel signed him for Team Radioshack.

Fairy tales are rare in pro cycling, but 25 year old Matthew Busche’s story is as close as they come. Starting the 2009 season as an amateur in the US, he rode just four races for Kelly Benefits before finding himself on Team Radioshack, where he recently podiumed in the Tour of Denmark.
