Leipheimer on doping — and moving on from the past

VeloNews, Matthew Beaudin, 28 Urria 2014
Nork aipatua: Bitossi

In the November issue of Velo magazine, senior writer Matthew Beaudin explored the different paths taken by Levi Leipheimer, Christian Vande Velde, Tom Danielson, Dave Zabriskie, George Hincapie, and others after they confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs during their careers. This interview appears in part in that story, entitled “Shades of Grey.” The interview has been condensed.

People don’t want to hear what I have to say, and I don’t blame them

Velonews, Neal Rogers, 16 Ekaina 2014
Nork aipatua: Bitossi

Leipheimer is a former world-class athlete, but with a permanent stain on his legacy. He spent half his life building toward achievements that many see as meaningless. He is a former role model, but a man without a platform. He carries a wealth of knowledge about professional cycling, but is uncertain where that information is welcomed. He’s apologized for his actions, knowing full well that many will never forgive him.

In a family who prefers cars and convenience, my Uncle is the lone cyclist. He gave me my first road bike and introduced me to the love-hate relation that exists between every cyclist and a massive grade. Every year, my Uncle drags me out to watch one of the climbing stages of the Tour de California. Sometimes, we even heckle at more than one location, but for a few years we always cheered for the same guy.
